Maintaining Your Own Flower beds

A question was recently raised regarding flowerbeds. Some people would like to maintain their own flowerbeds, while others would rather let the landscapers do it. This was discussed with the landscaper to see how to let them know if homeowners want to do their own maintenance.

The landscaper suggested that we put up flags if we want to maintain our own flowerbeds. He said they won't touch anything between two flags.

If you would like to mark areas you want to maintain, stop by Harold Nolte's house (7091). He has flags you can use.

Dumpster for Christmas Trash

There will be a dumpster in the parking lot by the gazebo starting December 29th until January 5th. This is for Christmas trees and Christmas trash. Please note that we will be liable for and could be prosecuted if we put any of the following items in the dumpster. Toxic, hazardous, flammable or explosive materials, asbestos, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, chemicals, paints, motor oil, gasoline, freon (fridges and freezers), human waste, tires, mattresses, batteries, barrels, or materials not environmentally sound for disposal at a sanitary landfill.

This dumpster is for the Cottages at Sycamores HOA only. We will have to pay extra if they have to remove extra loads, so please don't tell others outside of our HOA. We don't want to pay to remove other peoples' junk!

Dryer Vent Cleaning -- Special Rate

Over the years dryer vents can build up with lint. This can make your dryer work harder, take longer to dry clothes and cause the heating element or other dryer parts to wear out prematurely. It is also possible that a dirty vent can cause a fire. If you haven't cleaned your vent in the last two or three years it's probably time to clean it. Cleaning it once every two years is recommended.

Rocky Mountain Duct Cleaning has offered to give a discount to homeowners in the Cottages. Their regular price for dryer vent cleaning is $125. They will do it for $95 if it is done on July 10th. You don't need to be home when they come out, they can access it from the roof.

If you would like to have your dryer vent cleaned for that price call Brandon at 801-759-2509 and tell him it's for the July 10th Cottages at Sycamores cleaning.

Animal Waste in the Community

We do have a problem with pet waste. There are areas in the grass that have a lot of dog mess. It is the responsibility of all pet owners to remove anything their pets leave behind.

Owners can be fined if they don't clean up after their pets. If you have pets that are out in public areas please make sure all waste is promptly cleaned up. This is not pleasant and is also a health problem with children playing on the lawns.

We love our community and want it to be the best it can be! With a little care it can be cleaner and nicer.

Trash Pickup Missed

Ace Disposal did not come to pick up trash yesterday. This is the second time in two weeks they have not picked up on Monday.

A call was made to Ace Disposal today. They were told that this is sub-standard service and is not acceptable. The driver's manager said that she would put our route on "tracking" which means the driver needs to report in when the trash is picked up for our street every Monday. We hope this will resolve this problem with no trash pickup. If not we will take stronger action.

Snow Removal Failure During the Last Storm

You may have wondered why the snow didn't get cleared during the last storm. Well, the company that did our snow removal for the last two years failed us. When questioned why they didn't come out to clear the snow they said we weren't on their list and if we want them to come we would be last on their list. It isn't clear why they did this to us.

This was a "perfect storm" (pun intended). We found out that they failed us late in the day on Wednesday just before Thanksgiving. Companies were all super busy because of all the snow we got and it was just before the holiday. As you could imagine it was pretty hard to find someone to come out to help us.

Since then we found a new company. We now have a company that we have contracted with to get snow cleared. The next time snow falls they are scheduled to come out to keep our walks, parking lot and drive entries clear.

We have our fingers crossed that we will have reliable snow removal for the rest of the winter season!

Early freeze - don't forget to disconnect your hoses

We're currently experiencing pretty cold nights. Sub-freezing temperatures have come early this year. Remember to remove your garden hose from the faucet.

Faucets are designed to keep from freezing but only if the hose is detached. This is what can happen if the hose is still attached. Frozen faucets like this can damage the hose and--even worse--break the faucet or pipe which can cause damage to the interior of your home.

It probably isn't needed but you can also go to the home improvement store and pick up an insulated faucet cover for added protection against frozen pipes.

Parking lot is NOT a storage lot

The parking lot at the top of the street is for parking cars for a maximum of 48 hours. It is not a place for storing vehicles.

There are times when the lot is full and cars need to be parked off the Cottages at Sycamores property. This is not convenient for those who can’t find a parking space in the lot.

If a car is left there for longer than 48 hours it is subject to being towed at the owner’s expense. Also note that cars with expired registration are not allowed to park in the lot, and are also subject to being towed at owner's expense.

New General information page

There is a new page on the Cottages at Sycamores website called General Information. It contains useful information and is worth reading over. New general information will be placed on that page over time.

This News and Events page will have news and information that is useful for a time and the General information page will have information that is useful long after it is put on the page. Information like where to send your payment can be found on the General information page.

Ginger Johnson will be missed

You probably noticed the pink ribbons all over the cottages in May. This was done as a tribute to Ginger Johnson who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Ginger was a board member on the Cottages at Sycamores HOA board. She moved in to our neighborhood a couple of years ago. She had been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer years before and beat it. But unfortunately it came back a couple of times, and the last time she wasn't able to fight it. All those who knew her grew to love her. She will be missed.

Thank you gift for Sergio Fernandez

Our previous president, Sergio Fernandez, resigned on March 1st, 2017 after serving all of us in the HOA for seven years. He sent the following letter to the board on January 4, 2017.

The HOA board wants to thank Sergio for his many years of dedicated service to our community. His leadership and hard work have made the Cottages a very nice place to live. The financial situation of Cottages at Sycamores is very sound due to his leadership. We are all indebted to his service.

The HOA board wanted to acknowledge Sergio for all he has done for the community. The board gave him a $100 gift card good toward dining at Darden Restaurants which includes Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse and other restaurants he can choose from.

Sergio, again thank you for your service.
